This is a serious situation and maybe not the best time but I have to say I don’t think it would be the end of the world if we did something about open cockpits going forward to better shield the drivers heads, even if it is “ugly”

I think when something like this happens, and I really hope there is a good outcome to this, I agree it isn’t really the best time to think about changing things because it tends to make people hyper aware of the risk of open cockpits, but slightly less aware of the risks of closed cockpits.

I do honestly believe that if closed cockpits were better, or safer, we’d already have them. The extra time taken to get a driver out of a damaged closed cockpit, even if one could be built that could cope with an impact like that, could be catastrophic.

Exactly. And even a closed cockpit wouldn’t prevent deceleration injuries like Jules’. Plus there’s issues of steaming up, getting dirty etc – you couldn’t just reach out and tear off a strip like they do with a visor. Closed cockpits wouldn’t solve all the problems in motorsport.
