People who only speak english will never understand the struggle of not knowing if you have to call someone the ‘formal you’ or the ‘informal you’

considering a majority of native english speakers don’t even know the difference between ‘your’ and ‘you’re,’ it’s probably for the best that the language isn’t made any more complicated than it is

Lmfao the shade

Jokes aside, actually native English speakers *do* feel uneasy calling people “you” in formal situations, and it can sound impolite. However, referring to people indirectly as “he” or (in particular) “she” is also considered impolite (”Who’s ‘she’, the cat’s mother?!”). A recent innovation to avoid this discomfort has been to start using “yourself” to politely refer to strangers you’re speaking to, for example in a customer service situation. The parallel of this is the use of “myself” instead of “me” in similar contexts, which many people find annoying and unnecessary – but linguistic innovation is rarely unnecessary. If people feel there’s a gap in the language, they’ll try to fill it!
