what’s christmas even like in non-christian families? in completely non-religious families? like what do you tell your children? “well, kids, we’re eating a whole lot of food and spending a fuckton of money spoiling you because some other people somewhere believe their holy lord and saviour and the greatest person to walk the earth was born 2000 years ago. here’s a playstation.”

yeah pretty much

That’s actually it

Pretty much yeah, but it’s also Yule, and the time of year where the days start getting longer again, so it’s a celebration of that with Christian elements added in later.

Icelandic Yule is quite funny, we have the troll Yule lads and their evil troll mother and her evil Yule cat and various traditions around that…but the Yule lads now wear Santa costumes and some people go to church and it’s all very confusing. 😛

Omg I got to learn about your Icelandic Yule trolls (gnomes?) from an Icelandic family at work, and I was like, that’s a really cool tradition but omg they’re telling this to children? o_O

Haha, I know, right?! 😛 They’re trolls. I love it. 😀

I really wish we hung onto more of our folk traditions in England, but we’re really embarrassed by all that stuff so it’s mostly forgotten now. It’s sad really :/
