I’m not an expert or anything…but this might have something to do with it:

Wtf Brundle, you think people would come to more races if they thought they’d get the chance to see somebody die???  Now Marty, I know it’s a bit before your time, but do you remember that actually safety started to become more of a primary concern when promoters realised that actually, people dying in horrible fireballs wasn’t that appealing to broadcasters, sponsors or viewers? But as Ant Davidson was saying this morning, you want danger, well, let’s go back to aluminium cars and fuel tanks, and let’s do away with helmets altogether and have the drivers race wearing sunglasses. That enough danger for you?
