I was at the Italian Grand Prix this past weekend. I’ll probably make a longer post about it all later but I was lucky enough to meet and thank Giuly, Rob, Sophie, Francesco, Raffa, Titonio, Nicolas and Matteo for all they’d done for Felipe over the years. I was able to hand Raffa a card & letter for Felipe saying what I couldn’t possibly express in person.
Above all else though, I was able to thank Felipe in person (twice!), the second time being after the race as the family were leaving the circuit. Squeezed up against the barrier while he signed all the way down the line of fans waiting for him, I waved goodbye to Raffa and Felipinho. Felipe clasped my hand and kissed my cheek. I thanked him again and told him “whatever you do, be happy, because you deserve it.” I lost count of the number of times he thanked me back.
When he walked back to his waiting car with Felipinho, he lifted both arms up and waved as the crowd chanted his name, “FE-LI-PE! FE-LI-PE! FE-LI-PE!”. Like a departing hero.
WEEPING AGAIN, BYE
Then we sat on the kerb and cried for a while like dignified English ladies.
