F1 | Jean Todt asked Massa to become a Race Official
Felipe Massa revealed that he was invited by the president of FIA to consider becoming a Race Official during the GPs and bring his expertise of ex-driver
It would seem that Felipe Massa’s retirement is not set in stone, in case Bottas were to leave Williams in favor of Mercedes, the Brazilian driver may extend his stay in Sir Frank’s team for another season.
Following rumors of Valtteri Bottas being named as the primary candidate to fill Nico Rosberg’s vacant seat, Williams is now looking for a driver to partner with rookie Lance Stroll, and a sensible option may be Felipe Massa.
Despite this promising option for 2017, Massa revealed to UOL Esporte that he received another offer for the 2017 season, by becoming a Race Official during F1 weekends and bring his expertise of ex-driver to the team of Charlie Whiting.
It would appear that the offer came directly from the FIA president, Jean Todt, whom made the offer to Massa to work for the Federation. The offer did not impress the former Williams driver, who doubt whether a position as Race Official is sensible option. Nevertheless, Massa does not exclude the possibility of working for FIA in other roles where his experience as a driver could be an asset.
“He said he wanted me to become a Race Official but it am not sure that it is something I am interested in” said the Brazilian driver about Todt “I could definitely work with FIA and collaborate with the team that takes care of the security and safety measures to protect the driver or something similar to that role. Race Official? I am not so sure”.
