On the light of Marielle’s murder, I’d like to make it known that the situation in Brazil is worse than you might be aware of. It’s one of the most violent countries in america, if not the most. The crime rates here are unbelievable and organized crime basically runs the country. And we don’t even have to go to the cities you are most familiar with like Rio or São Paulo. Just my city, Fortaleza, had the homicide rates grow 96% just in the past year. There were people who were killed because they took pictures with the V sign, unaware that it was the symbol of a very powerful crime faction.
There are teenagers being recruited to join these factions, teenage girls dating adult crime masters and then being killed by opposing factions because they were the leader of the faction’s “Novinha”, people are afraid of going to parties or certain places because absolute massacres occurred there just less than 6 months ago. And if that doesn’t make you think “Wait, that’s terrorrism.” then you need to read that again.
The brazilian police is one of the police that kills the most in the world. Stop and Frisk isn’t a thing that happens only in the USA, and many black people in brazil are killed just because they “look suspicious”. By 2017 data, 12 women are killed and 135 raped in Brazil every day. The government barely does anything useful.
I could go on and on about Brazil’s distopian present but I suppose I’d spend all week here.
“But I’m not a Brazilian!” I hear you say, “There is nothing I can do to help!”. Yes there is. We and those from other countries stood with America protesting after you elected Trump, we shared every post about net neutrality, we did all we could in many situations. So please stand with us now.
Share this post or other posts letting people know about our situation, protest, send a box of poisonous snakes to the president’s house with “Fora Temer” written on it, anything would be appreciated. The U.S. managed to force Brazil into WWII and decades later into a dictatorship, England managed to make us end slavery (not because they were good people, but so they’d have a bigger buying market), Portugal literally explored us for centuries and even the Netherlands had a hand in our history, so please, I beg you, do not let us here to deal with our problems unnoticed again. I want to grow with my country, I had ancestors who were here before the portuguese, I had ancestors who came here running from their homes, my great grandmother ran away from portugal because of a dictatorship to seek acceptance in Brazil. Right now there are Venezuelans coming here for the same reason. I don’t want to be forced to move to another country because mine is too dangerous. No one should.
