DAVID ELLIS: This shoot was taken for the cover of NME and was at the time of the Libertines debut album. The boys turned up and began drinking promptly and continued to do so throughout the shoot. Even at this early point in their career together, the competitiveness between both Pete and Carl was evident. I particularly like this shot as it offers up an image of friendship and serenity. The shoot finished up with the band and crew dancing around the studio to one of Pete & Carl’s favourite tracks – Bugsy Malone – You Give A Little Love.
Carl Barat; proudly tells people that he gives great hugs then won’t shut up about it when a frequent recepient of said hugs presented him with a “massive boner”.
“I don’t know, we had love affairs, and whatever, and drugs, but nothing that really captured (us) two completely and songs did that. I’d always live inside songs and so would he, and then we’d create our own ones and that was that, and that was everything.”
