In a post dated June 16, 2002 on The Libertines’ forum entitled “Queens of Noize -v- The LIbertines”, Doherty wrote : ready to go now… carlos blinded by hair on his all white bed spreadeagle like a born again lustful jesus.
In a Christmas 2002 interview with the NME, when asked the question “If Jesus walked among us now, who would he be?” Doherty responded, “Carlos Barat.”
– In Kids in the Riot, Doherty described the blossoming of his friendship with Barat in 1998: “I needed saving, I was in a bad way. Carl came and saved me, he took me under his wings really, turned my life over.” (p.9)
In “You’re My Waterloo,” lyrics include the passage, “You’re my Waterloo / And I’ll be your Calvary.”
Of “New Love Grows on Trees,” Peter told the NME (March 18, 2009): “I wrote this about Jesus. The cross is the tree. Three of them died that day. Jesus and two murderers. Maybe I’m getting my films mixed up.”

I’ll add that in Death on the Stairs people have theorised that the lyrics, “Jesus and his little unholy friend” refer to Carl (Jesus) and Peter (the little unholy friend aka the devil).
Also regarding Death on the Stairs, from Peter’s journals:
“When I know for a fact that the days in the sun were illusions. When I see the tears and tears in my proud father’s coat, When my saviour, my lord, the one who promised me life Is drinking in Stepney with his soon to be wife, Then, sure as McFuckety, It’s time for Death On The Stairs.”
I sometimes imagine Peter as the pale young Anglican, looking deceptively non-threatening and making false promises to help her all he can, only to introduce her to Carl and his many poisons. Well.
