I can’t imagine what the guests must have thought as a stranger button-holed one of the waiters, and the quiet of the theatre bar is shattered as he screams: ‘What are you doing here? Can’t you see these people are cunts? We’re meant to be writing songs!’ The room screeched to a halt, a hundred heads turning towards us, now centre stage in the encroaching silence. I was livid. But what Doherty lacked as a lover, he more than made up for when it came to wooing Evelina. He penned love poems about her and bought her a second-hand jumper. Every time she spent a night with him, he insisted on making her breakfast and then sang their favourite love song, Gorecki by Manchester-based Lamb. He would even wash her hair to show his devotion.
Then in August Evelina flew home to Stockholm to see her family. When she returned a month later Pete had set up home with guitarist Carl Barat, whom he was to form the Libertines with, in Camden, North London. The boys shared a bedsit and Carl hated it when the lovers got intimate late at night. Evelina said: “Pete started kissing me once in the middle of the night and Carl shouted, ‘Be quiet’. He then stormed out and made himself a cup of tea. Pete told me Carl didn’t like the effect I had on him and somehow our relationship seemed to change. Pete started playing games and saying stuff like, ‘Oh I mustn’t spoil you’, or, ‘Don’t fall in love with me’.
So I was looking through old blogs the other day and I came across something I’d not noticed before. We all know the infamous 2009 Q Magazine quote from Carl on meeting Peter for the first time as teenagers:

What I’d missed is that the interview was recorded, and what made it to print (at least online) differed from the original transcript. There was one word missing: wily.
According to the original transcript of the long-lost interview recording, Carl actually described Peter’s eyes thus:
But he did have wily, electric eyes and a really fascinating curiosity about everything. I found myself wanting to impress him, for some reason.
It doesn’t change the sentiment of the meeting, but it does somewhat alter the mood, to something a bit more playful.
Also note the comma, hence pause, between “impress him” and “for some reason”.

Boys like physical contact. If you enjoy physical companionship, romance, something tender, you just want it to be true. That’s Libertine-ism: no barriers, no borders, no fakers, no forgers. Pleasure is pleasure.
of course there are also photos of peter and wolfman kissing but i’m sure we’ve all seen them
i don’t think i need to mention all those interviews in which he says he was in love with carl… (but you know…. no homo)

plus i remember a quote from an article where the interview asks him if hes slept with men and he replies ‘you cant ask me that, but you cant ask me if ive slept with women either’ which i thought was rather telling
