Another story from Margate that I’ve been meaning to tell is the Tales of the Painter, haha. When we were first outside the Albion Rooms on the Sunday morning, he was just finishing up the paintwork on the outside of the building. He was very friendly and happy to talk to us, and we chatted with him several times over the time we were there. We decided he was called “Steve” or “Dave” because they always are, haha, but we never learnt his actual name, sorry lad! He’s done the whole outside of the building in 23 days, and is about to start on the inside, which has all been plastered now. He’s been staying there too, in Gary’s room, but when Gary is there he moves into the attic, which is full of Peter’s artwork, with canvases all over, and he said when he sleeps up there he’ll wake up with a cat in his face, lol.

He said scaffolding should’ve been going back up on the Monday as they’re doing some alterations to the dormer windows on the top floor? But when we saw him at the party on Sunday, we weren’t surprised that no scaffolding was forthcoming the day after, lol. He told us on Tuesday that he’d got back to the Albion Rooms at 5am or something, fallen asleep on the sofa, gone out again to the pub the day after, and when he got back Peter was like, “Don’t you ever stop?!” I thought that was an amusingly wholesome Peter story, haha.

We asked if the boys were moving back in to start work on the record etc, and he said, rather vaguely, “Eventually…” but I think they’re still hoping to open the bar by October, so he’d better get a shift on I guess!

I don’t think we ever told the story of Peter And The Cake did we @missoneminute? When we checked into our first hotel in Margate (the one a couple of doors down from the Albion Rooms), one or both of us was wearing a libs t-shirt, so the girl at reception noticed and told us that “he” (Peter is just “he” to everyone in Margate haha) goes to the hotel “when he’s hungry” and “steals all the cake”. We were a little concerned lol but she did clarify that he pays for the cake at least, haha, but she said something like he “scoops it up” which gave us a delightful mental image of him shovelling it all into a bag and disappearing with his haul, lol.

If you go into any establishment in Margate wearing libs attire, the staff are more than happy to regale you with plenty of anecdotes about Peter’s escapades around town! He’s a regular in the second hand shops, of course – as @missoneminute said in her post before, he’s bought up a bunch of mannequins, typewriters, and also record players that he keeps breaking and going back to buy more, lol. He’s clearly giving the local economy a real boost! I thought maybe people in the town would be annoyed by fans wandering around poking their noses in, but everyone is super friendly and welcoming and chatty, it’s such a lovely place. Carl’s chosen well!

On the same topic, Peter was mega into Mic Righteous’s set at Wheels & Fins! He came onstage and introduced him (told us off for not being enthusiastic enough at first, sorry Peter, i only looked up from my phone when i heard people pop and realised Peter was right there lol) and watched his set from the side of the stage, and he looked enthralled throughout like a little boy, it was so cute! And he was also eating like a massive sandwich or burger or something, lol.

Oh i should tell my meeting Peter story too right? Haha sorry for forgetting you Peter! Well, I’d looked out of our hotel room window about 8.30am and seen him going across the road from his car to the Albion Rooms, then later we saw him outside chatting to people, and eventually we headed down to hang outside there as well, a perfect time filler before the festival! He kept coming and going, talking to people and getting distracted, but he was on great form and very funny, intentionally and otherwise, lol. I thought it was very welcoming of him to turn to me and say hello before i even approached him, and i was able to give him my silly gift of two of old Sheffield United v QPR football match programmes (that i found in the same charity shop as Carl’s record, haha). He did exactly what i hoped he would, and looked at one of the players’ lists and started recalling them, even telling us a little anecdote about one of them (called Karl something lol) who was a very snappy dresser, haha. He asked me if i remembered the players, but I told him i didn’t know anything about football, i just wanted to give him a nostalgic moment, haha. Just like Carl he was very gracious and happy to talk to people and ask them questions, there’s never a lack of conversation with these boys!
