WELL ANYWAY here’s some bits I did record/do remember from Carl on Lucie’s radio show:

– he started off saying he was feeling “a bit shabby”, but stressed he’s been well-behaved, he just has toothache. Poor bb
– his first music pick was Venus in Furs, and he told the story about getting it on a cassette from a teacher (called Gideon Williams)
– he also chose Spanish Bombs by the Clash, and said during rehearsals last night with the Libs (!!!) it must’ve come up and he realised he’d never really known the lyrics to it. So he looked them up, and wasn’t disappointed
– another choice was My Own Cheating Heart, by his old mates Glasvegas. This was where he called himself a “long time mumbler” and admitted people find him hard to decipher, lol
– someone asked if he wrote music or lyrics first, and he basically said either way round, one leads to the other
– someone asked if he made it out of Hull unharmed, lol. He said he did mainly, though might’ve been a bit mentally scarred, haha. “Like a mini Glastonbury in a shopping centre.” Sadly all the shops were closed, so he couldn’t pick up any Iceland bargains (which led to the nuanced discussion of the correct preparation of chicken kievs: the secret is, don’t overcook them). Big up Hull!
– chose Bob Dylan’s Tangled Up in Blue because he was “in a lyric-y mood”, which offered an opportunity for one of many outings for his terrible American accent
– they talked about the first records they bought, and Lucie recounted with great affection how Carl bought her Hangin’ Tough by NKOTB, n’aww (but that bit didn’t record, nooooo)
– someone asked about the worst jobs they’d ever had, and Carl told the story of his job at the front desk of the depot injection clinic, and also the story of the job he and Peter had selling windows and telling people there was thousands of pounds hidden in their homes, lol.
– he’s going to Australia tomorrow (Wednesday), but seemed very reluctant to wear shorts. Mate it’s gonna be 30+ degrees don’t fry (and show us dem pins!!!)
– Lucie chose to play Bang Bang You’re Dead, which Carl was unprepared for, and so when she asked him to talk about the lyrics he kind of dodged that a bit, just saying it was a bad time in his life, and then talked about being in Switzerland and Alan McGee demanding songs from him, so he made up the title and then, when Alan approved of it, had to come up with the song. He did extensive impressions of McGee calling him “Carol”, which were much better than his American accent and pretty funny BUT ofc those didn’t record either so sorryyyy ;(

The show isn’t up on Lucie’s MixCloud yet but keep an eye on it!
