Roundhouse, 4/6/18. (Sorry for the terrible quality!)
The Libertines @ Hoping For Palestine, 4/6/18
This was a really great show, no regrets about the day of intense anxiety I had over the tickets I obtained, haha. Worth the whole saga!
– Peter was – there’s only one word for it – messy from the outset, haha. He fluffed words and guitar parts seemingly without noticing or caring, started sentences that didn’t go anywhere, broke about 10 mics, broke a string on his Telecaster after about two songs, lay down on the stage at least three times, and basically gave up on playing guitar altogether by about halfway through, lol.
– Carl was also well on the way, though he was a bit more in control of the situation, lol. There was a moment quite early on tho where he threw his arms round Peter from the side and I thought they both might topple over for a sec, ha. The first time Peter lay down was behind the amps, and Carl was leaning over him and eventually picked him up, with some unsteadiness, lol.
– Carl had to chivvy him for the start of Time for Heroes – he played the opening chords himself several times, looking at Peter like “Come on we need to do this one now!”
– Of course, we had to sing happy birthday to Carl, who endured some teasing about his new posh Saint Laurent suit and shoes, heh. (I’m trying to remember if Peter used the phrase “twinkle toes” or not, if anyone else can recollect!) Peter made a birthday reference that maybe didn’t land as well as he’d liked, so shortly afterwards he brought it up again and led us in song, lol.
– Carl looked VERY VERY GOOD in said posh suit. When they came onstage I had a @jessinthesky moment and was like “Where’s Carl??” cos he looked so different with his hair short and unstyled, haha. He also looked pretty tanned, which is also always lovely~
– They played a bit of Golden Brown, and rather more of Everybody’s Talkin’, which Carl was keen to continue, telling Peter “Play it! Play it!”
– You’ll probably have seen by now, but a rapper called Mic Righteous (from Margate, apparently and perhaps unsurprisingly) joined them for Gunga Din, which actually worked out pretty well!
– There was actually a very nice moment where Carl spoke about the power of Patti Smith’s words in her earlier performance, when she spoke about the futility of war and the necessity of love and the power of the people. Peter shopped him a bit beforehand by saying that Carl said “he didn’t know much about Patti Smith, but knew that she was very revered”, but what Carl said really resonated with me because, like him, I didn’t really know much about her either but, just like he said, I got genuine goosebumps when she was speaking with such belief and force. He was sincere and passionate and brought us back to the reason why they – and everyone else – were there, and I appreciated that moment and that feeling of connection.
– Immediately after this, Peter played a chord and Carl made a face and was like “Urgh! Tune that!” Then, as Peter did, he was like, “You could’ve been doing that while I was talking!” in his long-suffering dad way, lol.
– Peter was extremely attentive to Carl throughout, singing in his direction a lot of the time, and you’ll probably have seen by now the moment in Time for Heroes where he fell to his knees on the stage in front of him. There was a LOT of face-smushing, initiated by both of them, and as the show went on they were laughing and giggling together a lot, at who knows what. Like someone else mentioned, I’m pretty sure someone got licked at at least one point as well, haha. There was definitely more affection on display than at any of the shows I saw last year! It was a good vibe, if an undoubtedly pissed up one, ha.
…Aaaaand that’s about all the significant stuff I can remember, haha. Will post more if I remember it!
