“Everyone was very angry and upset and hurt and every other emotion… But it’s a lot of water under the bridge. Those things aren’t interesting to us any more”

“Peter was more of a poet, so he helped to teach me to use the language in a more colourful way… Down the line we kind of grew together.”
“It wasn’t so much about being in a band, it was about being in a gang… Living and breathing the romance that I’ve always had, and the dream that was in my head, and the shared dream that we cultivated together.”
Peter and Carl on stage at with The Libertines at Jools Holland in 2002, reacting after Mick Jones compared them to The Beatles. (x)
“There’s no one else on the planet that could ever be what Peter is to me, and me to him – it’s just impossible”
Carl talks about going to Thailand to write what became Anthems For Doomed Youth with Peter. (Sorry about having to film off the TV, but i hope it’s comprehensible!)
We still cut the same jokes we made 20 years ago. We still take the mick out of each other and argue about the same things we would have done 20 years ago.
“We’re all a little older and all have kids. A lot has happened to us and it would be churlish of me to say we haven’t changed at all. I’ve definitely mellowed, Carl has mellowed, even Peter has mellowed to a degree.
“Peter is constantly writing, that’s what he does. He’s been writing some poetry with a girl in Margate and recording with some other people down there. I’ve been writing some stuff. John sent some stuff over a couple of weeks ago that was great too. Pete and Carl have got together and they’ve been writing together.
“[The hotel project is] here to stay. We’ve been working hard on this, Carl especially. Carl has been working arduously, day in day out, to ensure that surveyors and agents and studio builders have been booked. Carl is the engine. He wanted to do something so we could all go back to the good old days where we could be creative and be together.
We are a little bit mental. We are about to go to Australia! We have also bought a hotel in Margate, which was ranked amongst the top 5 worst establishments in the country on Tripadvisor! It is a fully-functional building that we welcome people who either do or do not like our music to come to. You can say you hate The Libertines, you don’t need to like the music that I do, but you do need to be a nice person. Even if you don’t like the music, you could have a great sense of humour or be the most intellectual person ever. So I could still learn something from you. People can come along and have a drink, create something… whatever. It is a hub. Carl came up with the idea! The studio in it is nearly finished now.
“…And very offensive, actually”
