I can 1000% understand why my fellow Massa fans might not be so enthused for Felipe’s probably return, for emotional or any other reasons. Ngl, I am childishly thrilled to see him in F1/on TV 20 times a year/with Rob for another season – not to mention the fact that it actually fills me with glee that, after YEARS of people writing him out of the sport, and eventually retiring when he effectively became surplus to requirements, it in fact turned out that he was exactly what Williams required after all: experienced both in the sport and the team, offers stability and is a known quantity, and, importantly for a team sponsored by an alcohol brand that has a very specific set of requirements, is over 25 years old.
But one thing I naively failed to take into account was that, of course, that entails another year of Felipe getting flak for things entirely out of his control. It’s not Felipe’s fault that Martini wants an older driver than the majority who might be on the market; plus, a lot of the other options are frankly unrealistic anyway. Re-hiring Felipe, even if just for one more year, makes perfect sense right now, but I’m already bracing myself for yet another year of shit-talking from people who were gushing about how much they were going to miss him a month ago – and even more so from those who didn’t even feel that way.
ANYWAY who even knows what 2017 is going to be like? When Felipe announced his retirement, I thought maybe I’d not be as interested, but by the time it actually came around I already knew that wasn’t going to be true, lol. But now, for better or worse, I have an added investment, and it doesn’t even really matter to me (much) if the Williams is shit cos that might make it easier if Felipe is only around for one more year, lol. I’m relatively fresh, I’ve only been dealing with the F1 lyfe for less than 6 years, I can brace myself for one more… right??
