favorite pairing to write
Currently it’s obv Rolipe, but idk if I could ever say what my favourite pairing to write, ever, is – I love them all very deeply at the time I’m writing them! My OTPs tend to have a similar dynamic, ie varying degrees of cheerful one/grumpy one, but Rolipe has an interesting little twist in that the Grumpy One is also often the more publicly affectionate one. There’s some interesting tsundere-ness at work as well, with Rob going on about how annoying Felipe is etc when people try and get him to say nice things, but immediately and very fiercely defending him as soon as anyone starts slagging him off. And this is reminding me of the time I wrote a meme answer about why I love Rolipe and TUMBLR LOST IT and I never rewrote it but it was great ;(
20. favorite character to write
I enjoy writing both Rob and Felipe – Felipe because I get to pretend I’m a nice person, and Rob cos that’s more of an outlet for being the bastard I really am lol. (I know Rob’s not a full-time bastard, especially where Felipe is concerned, but he’s more bastardly than Felipe is and it’s cathartic ;3) Also, I know I’ve said this before but I do love writing Rob’s northernness as well 😉
31. easiest part of writing
Dialogue! It’s fun, flows easily, keeps the story moving and fills up lots of word space so you can write a whole chapter in no time! And writing characters’ voices is a fun challenge too – writing an ESL character like Felipe is interesting cos you have to try and think how they’d express particular things (I do love writing Massaspk ngl). Plus Rolipe bantz is just way too much fun and they give us so much inspiration – them taking the piss out of each other is just too easy to write, cheers lads~
42. do you plan or do you write whatever comes to your mind?
Usually I have only the vaguest of plans – often just a starting point or a general theme – and I wait, and I think, and eventually the rest unveils itself and I write it down as it does. Sometimes that takes a very long time lol. Occasionally I do have a much more detailed plan (or at least, my idea has more details) but usually I can’t force it – I have to wait until the bits come to me, or the result is usually poor.
Me: Okay brain, it’s time to sit down and write this thing
Brain: But what if we didn’t?
Me: What do you mean if we didn’t? It has to be done! We have to make ourselves sit down and write this.
Brain: Or we could not do that.
Me: Listen, I’m going to make some tea and the two of us are going to sit here and bang this shit out.
Brain: tralalalalalalala…

Fun fact
Native Americans weren’t allowed US citizenship until 1924.
Let that sink in. We lived here first…for thousands of years. And less than a hundred years ago we were finally given citizenship.
We also fought in WWI despite not being US citizens.
In Arizona, natives weren’t granted the right to vote until 1948. Think how that type of neglect ties into resource colonization as infrastructure was developed within years prior.
In addition: the indigenous peoples of Canada were not recognized as Human Beings until the year 1960.
Now let that shit sink in.In the US it wasn’t until 1968 that the Indian Civil Rights Act was passed and allowed for the right to freedom of speech / assembly / press, a jury trial, the right to an attorney etc. It’s so fucking frustrating.
and it wasn’t until 1978 that we were legally allowed to practice our own religions. in a nation founded on religious freedoms, it was illegal to practice our own religions. in our own country. how fucked up is that?
Aaaand Native Americans weren’t entitled to their own languages (had no legal rights to teach them in their schools, use them in business) until the Native American Language Act of 1990.
I teach this to my students, because NONE of it is in a single textbook. This is and act of indoctrination
Just 500 words of belated post-Brazil Rolipe, cos I was imagining this scene of them hugging like I’m sure so many of us were.
When Rob next sees Felipe, his eyes are dry.
Rob wishes he could’ve been there in the pitlane to cry with him, but it’s just a small, selfish wish. It’s best he wasn’t anyway, because while when Felipe cries there’s a dignity in his emotion, when Rob does, he’s just a bleary mess. He doesn’t want to be reminded of that in every TV montage to come.
Felipe smiles when he sees him, a beautiful, soft, real smile, standing there still in his soaking wet race suit.
“You alright?” Rob says first. “At the medical centre.” He feels like he’s missed the moment, through having to sit staring at screens for lap after lap of a gloomy and interminable race, for no reward at the end. He might as well have come off the pitwall anyway, to be with Felipe – another selfish thought. Felipe didn’t need him there, he had enough people around him, and Rob is here now, anyway. But Rob can’t suppress the pang of regret that he wasn’t a part of it all as well, because now he doesn’t really know what kind of a place Felipe is in, what he might want or need or feel. Rob is still stuck in that moment, but he doesn’t know where Felipe is.
“Yes, I am fine,” Felipe says. “I apologise to the team,” he says with a little smile. “Maybe they thought I do it on purpose.”
Rob chuckles. “To be the centre of attention,” he says. “Yeah, that’s just like you.”
Felipe laughs quietly, then he’s quiet for a moment. “I did not expect… everything,” he says softly.
Rob falters a little then, because he’s not surprised that Felipe says that, humble as he is, but Rob wasn’t at all surprised at the reception in the pitlane, the love, the admiration, the words from the media that, Rob thinks, were well overdue. They’ve had years to say those things, when they should’ve, and they didn’t. No wonder Felipe didn’t expect it all.
Rob thinks he might point that out, next time he’s interviewed on live TV, because he’s certain Felipe won’t. And, Rob thinks dryly, that’s why, when he retires, he won’t get quite the same affectionate send off as Felipe.
“You deserve it,” Rob says, and it comes out more fiercely than he intended. He takes Felipe in his arms now, pulling him close with all the feeling he’s been holding onto since that moment, watching Felipe on a screen when all he wanted to do was this, hold him, kiss him, be with him. Felipe must be all hugged out now, he probably doesn’t need any more comforting, but Rob knows this is for himself as much as Felipe. He needs it just as much.
“You deserve it all. And more,” he murmurs. He kisses Felipe’s temple, right there, like he has done for years, and will still do whenever he gets the chance, and holds Felipe as tightly as he ever has.
The problem with writing fic and spending a long time in fandoms is that eventually you’ve plucked all the low-hanging fruit, and things inevitably become more difficult. Even if you still have the ideas, you feel like you’ve run out of fresh words – you get to the point where you’re repeating (or feel like you are at least) the same stock phrases and sentences, and you don’t know how many times you’ve used them. Of course everyone has a style, but I feel like I always describe similar situations and actions using exactly the same phrases. A fine classical tradition, but I’m not an epic poet, I have the benefit of writing and Gdocs. Just need a better brain. :/a
Haseeb is the best, but he’s 19. When Haseeb was born I was already in Year 6, which means if we were teammates back then I would have been netting with a baby. I don’t know anything about infant care. Oh my god, I could have killed him.
